Why Communication Style Matters More Than Skills in Startup Hiring
I once placed two candidates with nearly identical technical skills at the same founder. Both could do the job cold. But their communication styles were oil and water. One was direct, assertive, challenged ideas. The other was reserved, thoughtful, waited to be asked. Neither was better. But the founder was intuitive, fast-moving, communicated by throwing ideas around.
Guess who thrived? The direct communicator. The other felt constantly overridden. Same skills. Different communication styles. Massive difference in actual performance. This is what founders miss when they’re hiring.
Communication Style Is Chemistry in Action
Chemistry First isn’t abstract.
It lives in how you and your team actually communicate.
Do you make decisions by talking it through, or do you need time to think?
Do you want people to challenge you in the moment?
When you hire someone whose communication style doesn’t match yours, you get constant friction.
Not because anyone’s wrong. But because you’re speaking different languages.
The Four Communication Styles
- Passive communicators avoid conflict, prioritise harmony, struggle to say no. They’re great at consensus-building, terrible at pushing decisions forward.
- Aggressive communicators are quick to decide, quick to act. They move mountains. They also steamroll people.
- Passive-aggressive communicators agree in the room, then undermine later through subtle resistance.
- Assertive communicators – the sweet spot – are direct and clear while respecting other people’s input. They can push hard and still listen.
In a startup, assertive communication usually wins because ambiguity demands clarity.
How to Actually Assess Communication Style
Don’t ask people what their communication style is.
They’ll tell you what they think you want to hear. Instead, watch and listen.
In the interview, how do they handle your questions?
When you disagree, how do they respond?
Ask behavioural questions.
“Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager.”
Their answer reveals everything. Pay attention to pattern, not perfection.
What to Do Now
Before you hire, spend ten minutes being honest about how you communicate.
Are you direct or do you hedge?
Do you want people to push back or respect your decisions?
Then when you’re interviewing, listen for those patterns in how candidates actually communicate. That’s how you build a team where the conversation flows instead of fights. Ready to think through your hiring communication strategy? Book a Hiring Health Check.
