HFBAC (Hiring For and Building Awesome Companies) helps bootstrapped founders, entrepreneurs and business owners build founding teams that actually work.
After 20+ years building teams, from BBC Sports to helping 400+ founders, entrepreneurs and business owners through British Library and Virgin StartUp workshops, I (Helen) noticed a pattern:
Startups don’t fail because founders, entrepreneurs and business owners can’t find talented people.
They fail because they hire the wrong people.
Impressive CVs. Terrible chemistry.
So I built the Chemistry First Framework, a systematic way to hire for fit, not just credentials.

Fully Remote, Truly Flexible
- You work from wherever you are (home, coworking space, anywhere with reliable internet)
- We care about results, not where or exactly when you work
- Some UK timezone overlap is needed for occasional meetings (1-2 hours per week)
- Mostly asynchronous work - you manage your schedule
We're Building SOPs as We Go
- You won't find a 50-page operations manual
- You WILL help create it
- We document as we build, not before we build
- You'll have input on how we work, not just execute what we say
It's Growing (And Sometimes Chaotic)
- We're scaling from solo founder to small team
- Launch weeks are intense
- Priorities can shift based on client needs
- We work hard when it matters, then we rest

How We Hire (Chemistry First)
Not Sure If You're Right For This?
- You have strong English communication skills (written and spoken)
- You're self-motivated and don't need constant supervision
- You're comfortable with async work and occasional video calls
- You have reliable internet (minimum 10 Mbps) and a quiet workspace
- You're excited about supporting a growing business
- You're in a timezone that allows some overlap with UK hours (GMT)
- You need constant direction and can't work independently
- You're looking for a large corporate environment with established processes
- You need full-time hours immediately (we start part-time)
